Fair usage lets you offer a fast everyday speed, then slow the customer down after they use a set amount of data — without cutting them off. They stay online until the paid package window renews, then usage and full speed reset.
In plain language
Example: 30 Mbps package, 100 GB fair use. Before 80 GB they run at 30 Mbps. At 80 GB they get a warning SMS. At 100 GB speed becomes 5 Mbps. They are not disconnected. When the package renews, counters reset and 30 Mbps comes back.
FUP is optional and off by default. It is not the same as a data cap (that still disconnects), or PPPoE Grace Period (extra days after a cap or expiry).
Who it applies to
- PPPoE customers on a package with FUP enabled.
- Hotspot subscription accounts — a hotspot voucher that is linked to a customer (app / assigned account), not a walk-in guest code.
- Custom vouchers — on Generate Vouchers, Custom tab: set a time limit and leave data limit empty. Fair usage appears then. They stay online until the time ends; after the FUP GB, speed slows.
- Never guest/agent/captive codes from a package FUP — package FUP is for hotspot accounts linked to a customer. Custom time-only FUP is stored on that voucher.
- Never trial packages. FUP cannot be turned on for a trial.
Where to find it
- Open PPPoE → Fair Usage or Hotspot → Fair Usage. That page lists who is in warning or throttled. Select people to send the fair-use SMS, or Reset FUP so usage starts over and live speed returns to normal.
- Open PPPoE → Packages or Hotspot → Voucher Packages.
- Create custom hotspot vouchers: Hotspot → Generate Vouchers → Custom. Set a time limit, leave data limit empty, then enable Fair usage.
- Create or edit a package. Find the Fair usage (FUP) box and tick Enable FUP.
- Warning and throttle SMS templates live under Grow → Notifications.
- Live status: customer overview shows fair-use percent and Throttled when speed is reduced. PPPoE customers also see fair use on the portal usage card.
How to configure
Recommended: leave the package data cap empty (unlimited) and turn FUP on. That is “always online, slow after X GB.”
- FUP data allowance (GB) — how much data at full speed (e.g. 100).
- Warn at % — SMS when usage hits this share of the allowance (default 80).
- Throttle at % — reduced speed from this share (default 100). Warning % cannot be higher than throttle %.
- FUP download / upload (Mbps) — the reduced speed (e.g. 5 / 5). Must be greater than 0.
Optional: FUP on a capped package is allowed only when FUP GB is less than the data cap. Equal numbers are rejected. FUP slows first; the cap still disconnects later.
What happens in order
- Billing / time expiry — if the paid window ended, access follows your existing expiry rules (and grace, if enabled).
- Data cap — if the package has a hard cap and they hit it, they are disconnected (same as before FUP). FUP does not run a CoA throttle in that same kick.
- FUP throttle — at the throttle %, live session speed is reduced (RADIUS rate-limit / CoA). They stay connected.
- FUP warning — at the warning %, one SMS is sent (if they have a phone and notifications are on).
- Normal speed — below the warning threshold, or after renew when usage resets.
The FUP cycle is the package assignment / voucher life, not a second calendar month. Renewing or resetting usage restores full package speed.
SMS
Enable SMS notifications, then turn on the FUP templates:
- FUP warning — approaching the allowance (uses warn %).
- FUP throttled — speed has been reduced until renew.
PPPoE uses the customer phone. Hotspot accounts use the voucher guest phone, or the linked customer phone if that is empty. These SMS are separate from hotspot data-usage warnings and PPPoE Settings usage alerts.
Important caveats
- NettPortal does not change the shared MikroTik PPPoE profile rate-limit for FUP (that would slow everyone). Speed is per session.
- FUP never uses MikroTik total-byte disconnect. That attribute stays for the hard data cap only.
- Changing FUP on a package applies to new RADIUS logins and live CoA when usage crosses a threshold. Customers already on an old assignment keep that package until you reassign or they renew.
- If CoA cannot reach the router, the next login still gets the correct (throttled or full) speed from RADIUS.
