PPPoE Session Management

PPPoE Session Management in NettPortal provides real-time monitoring and management of active PPPoE connections across all your MikroTik routers. You can view active sessions, monitor data usage, check connection status, and disconnect sessions when needed. This comprehensive guide covers everything you need to know about managing PPPoE sessions.

🎯 What is a PPPoE Session?

A PPPoE session is an active connection between a customer's device (router or modem) and your MikroTik router using the PPPoE protocol. Each session represents a currently connected customer who has authenticated and is using your network. Sessions include information like username, assigned IP address, connection uptime, data usage (upload/download), and connection status.

Active Sessions Dashboard

The Active Sessions page provides a real-time view of all PPPoE connections across your routers:

📊 Session Information

  • Username: PPPoE username of the connected customer
  • Customer Name: Name of the customer account (if linked)
  • Router: Which router the session is connected to
  • IP Address: Assigned IP address for this session
  • Profile: PPPoE profile assigned to this session
  • Uptime: How long the session has been active
  • Data Usage: Total bytes downloaded and uploaded during this session

🔍 Filtering & Search

  • Router Filter: Filter sessions by specific router to see only connections on that router
  • Search: Search sessions by username, customer name, or IP address
  • Auto-refresh: Sessions automatically update every few seconds to show real-time status

Managing Sessions

You can manage active PPPoE sessions directly from the dashboard:

🔌 Disconnecting Sessions

Click the Disconnect button on any session to immediately terminate that connection. This is useful for:

  • Troubleshooting connection issues
  • Forcing a customer to reconnect with updated settings
  • Maintenance or network changes
  • Enforcing policy violations

⚠️ Note: Disconnecting a session will immediately interrupt the customer's internet connection. The customer will need to reconnect to regain access.

📈 Monitoring Usage

The dashboard shows total statistics across all sessions:

  • Total Sessions: Number of active PPPoE connections
  • Total Data Usage: Combined upload and download across all sessions
  • Per-session Details: Individual session data usage and connection time

Use Cases

Network Monitoring

Monitor all active PPPoE connections in real-time to track network usage, identify bandwidth-heavy users, and ensure service quality across all customers.

Troubleshooting

Quickly identify connection issues, check session status, and disconnect problematic sessions to force reconnection with fresh settings.

Maintenance

Disconnect all or specific sessions before performing router maintenance, configuration changes, or network updates to ensure a smooth transition.
